A couple of years ago I blogged about an adoption disaster–a woman in Tennessee who wanted to return a Russian child she had adopted. Actually, she did return the child–she just put him on a plane. Anyway, just to close out the story, here’s a recent update. Bottom line is that Torry Hansen owes child support for the child, whether he lives with her or not.
This is really unsurprising in a way–if you adopt a child you are a parent and you have undertaken responsibilities for the child, including the responsiblity to support the child. You cannot just decide you don’t want to do it.
It’s worth noting that Hansen asserts that the Russian adoption was voided, which is to say it is as if it never happened. If she is right–if legally the adoption never happened–then of course she wouldn’t owe support. No idea about the merits of the defense.
