A couple of months ago I blogged about a case where a very wealthy man facing a civil lawsuit adopted his girlfriend, possibly as a way to ensure that he had access to assets that the lawsuit couldn’t reach. As a refresher, John Goodman (not the actor), whose major claims to fame seem to be that he inherited a lot of money and that he played polo, was in an accident that killed a young man. He faced criminal charges and a civil suit arising out of allegations that he was intoxicated at the time of the accident.
Here’s a little update. Goodman has been convicted of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homocide. He faces a substantial jail sentence. It also appears he has settled the civil suit brought by the victim’s parents–possibly for tens of millions of dollars.
Now actually, the people who should care most about the adoption are not the victim’s parents–Goodman apparently has enough money for them, too. The people who should care are his other children, who now have to share the money with Goodman’s girlfriend. I do not know if they will pursue an action to void the adoption, but I’ll try to keep an eye out.
